Home Safely

June 1: One of my cousins recently returned home, having completed a tour in Afghanistan.  It’s not his first tour, but its completion feels the most poignant given the suicide bombing in Kabul earlier this week.  I’m grateful my cousin is here and not there.  But it’s a bittersweet and selfish gratitude.  There were so many others who were not lucky enough to be somewhere else.

My heart goes out to the families of all the dead and injured.  All we want in this world is for our loved ones to have a good life and be safe and the hard truth of life is that this is not always possible.   So we hold on tightly to what we can understand, our small corner of the world, and my small corner still gratefully includes my cousin.
