February 5th: I am thankful to live in a country where I can speak my mind. A friend reminded everyone in yesterday’s meeting that it is our right as citizens to write letters and call our representatives. This statement gave me pause. Free speech is a right I for one take for granted. I was born here and know no other way. It’s easy to forget that there are countries in the world where we could be punished for speaking out, even easier to forget that there are people here from those countries who know no other way than to stay silent. Today I am honoring my right to have a voice.
