The Season of Giving

Mystery gift turns into $300 regifts from 51 students for $15,300 worth of holiday surprises, the headline in last Wednesday’s Orange County Register read. The mystery donor who gave a boatload of cash to students at Los Alamitos High had just one mandate: “Make someone else’s day.”

I can’t help but think this mystery donor is a part of, or was inspired by, Nona Rafferty, the woman who started it all for me. The Register shared her birthday gifting story last August and she retired from this school district. Hmmm. Coincidence?

A friend of mine who recently turned 60 adapted my birthday challenge and is giving $60 to someone in need each month of her 60th year. Last month she gave money to a father at the grocery store who was trying to figure out how to pay for the non-food items his food stamps didn’t cover. Things like diapers and toilet paper.

You don’t need $60 or $15,300 to brighten someone’s day. Can you picture a 10-year old mailing $10 to 10 people for his/her 10th birthday? I can. And how fun would that be? Or simply give $10 to one person.

For it is in giving that we receive. ~Saint Francis of Assisi

And it is the season of giving.
