Downton Abbey

May 5:  Today I am grateful for the Downton Abbey television series.  I used to watch it at a friend’s house.  She would bring out her china cups and we’d have tea while watching an episode.  We admired the fashion, discussed what it would’ve been like to have been a woman of that time, gossiped about the characters, and savored the witty dialogue between Violet and Isobel.

My mom is also a Downton Abbey fan and today the three of us briefly relived the pleasure of that show.  Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times is a touring exhibit currently at one of our local museums.  It is a small and intimate exhibit showcasing many of the clothes worn in the series.  Many are made with vintage material; panels, lace, and beads from other dresses of the times, the coat in this photo sewn from a hand embroidered 1920’s tablecloth.  The outfits are exquisite and I’m so delighted to have seem them up close and personal.

We dressed and donned hats then sipped tea and ate scones with clotted cream at the Afternoon Tea offered with the exhibit.

It was a nice afternoon playing dress up and stepping back in time.
