My Dad’s Secretary

April 20: I’m grateful today for light traffic on my 3 hour round trip drive to run a dad related errand and for the nice lunch I had with his secretary while there.  Yep, my dad was old school up until the day he died.  She was his last secretary transitioning from his business secretary to his personal secretary when he retired.  In later years he even dictated to her his letters to me.  It was a strange way to communicate, with nothing ever really being private, but she was a godsend helping him to maintain his financial independence until the end.  She’s a warm and funny woman who always had my dad’s best interest at heart.   They got along famously because, as she tells it, she took no crap from him.

We lunched at one of his favorite restaurants and raised our glasses in honor of him and his recent 88th birthday.

It warms my heart to connect to people to whom my dad meant a great deal.  It keeps him with me a little longer, postponing the day when memories start to fade.
