Spring Teaser

March 4th: In the spaces between rainstorms there is spring, just enough spring to tease.  I spent the morning in the garden weeding, pruning, planting seeds for my butterfly garden, and hanging up hummingbird feeders.  A Mockingbird inches along a telephone line, hop hop pause, hop hop pause, silently moving into position to dive bomb two crows on the tree below.  A California Scrub-Jay noisily forages in a tree collecting twigs for nest building.  A tiny Anna hummingbird perches on the uppermost branch of one of our Willow trees resting, revealing its location with its distinctive call.  The flowering Chinese Holly hedge that lines a narrow walkway alongside our house buzzes with an abundance of bees.  I’m grateful for the spring teaser despite now being bundled up against the chill of the pending storm.
