January 21st: Many of my friends here and in other parts of the U.S. are attending the Women’s March today, an event whose mission is to promote our rights and honor the diverseness on which our nation is founded. Many of these women are from my generation and have never before participated in an activist event. Many have experienced first hand the inappropriate behavior of men and the pressure to conform. Many are concerned about the uncertain future of the racially and religiously diverse neighbors, friends, and family members they live with and love. Many are participating for reasons unknown to me, reasons for which I may not even agree. But all are stepping out of their comfort zone to answer the call to participate in our democracy. I am thankful to have such brave women in my life. Their example inspires me to be a better more active citizen.
