Stillness in Rain

January 13th:  Today I am thankful for rain.  Rain is rare here and it has rained most of this week.  Our plants, suffering from a year of water restrictions, are thirsty. Rain had made them new and fresh. Rain has washed away the grime of daily living. Rain has sweetened the air that I breathe.  Our limited water supply gains instead of wanes this week.  This week I am less of a taker.

Rain, which usually depresses me, has brought much needed comfort and stillness.  It has led me to my 2017 word – stillness.  Stillness, a word I struggle with, a word that makes me feel anxious because its opposite is busy and productivity – two words that society uses to define worth.  Yet stillness is important for getting to the heart of oneself, for restoration of oneself.  In the stillness you find your own self-worth.

I am thankful for this week’s rain because it proved to me that peace can be found in stillness.

One of my favorite teachings is “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

I am loving the rain, too. …
